RME just introduced a successor to the popular portable audio interface BabyFace Pro with the new BabyFace Pro FS. It features numerous enhancements such as better audio conversion, more output power, lower latency, and much more over the original BabyFace Pro. You still get the same 192 kHz sample rate support with up to 24 channels of I/O.
What’s new in RME BabyFace Pro FS?
The new RME BabyFace Pro FS Audio Interface now incorporates Full SteadyClock FS circuit which is also used in ADI-2 Pro FS. This ensures even lower jitter. The mic inputs in BabyFace Pro FS feature higher SNR at 113.7 dB which was previously 112.2 dB. Also, the SNR for TRS line outputs is also improved from 114 dB to 116.3 dB.
The 3.5mm TRS phones output now provides even more power out with 90 mW instead of 70 mW. Now BabyFace Pro FS uses the same output op-amp as ADI-2 Pro for TRS phones providing better THD by up to 10 dB. Moreover, the output impedance of these 3.5mm jacks is also lowered down to 0.1 Ohms from 2 Ohms.
In terms of latency, RME BabyFace Pro FS is even faster than its rock-solid predecessor boasting even lower AD latency by 6 samples. There is also a new +19/ +4 dBu switch that can directly reduce the output level. This gives the ability to avoid overloading or distortion of sensitive active monitors. Additionally, it keeps the faders of TotalMix FX software near 0dB avoiding high attenuations.
One of the great things about this update is that despite offering so many improvements, the power consumption remains the same. The new RME BabyFace Pro FS now also features K slot for theft protection. Overall this is a great upgrade over the widely admired interface.
Other Notable Features
Supporting up to 24 I/O channels, the new FS model offers the same amount connectivity options such as:
- 4 x Analog I/O
- 2 x Phones Output
- 1 x ADAT I/O
- 1 x MIDI I/O
- RME USB 2.0
- TotalMix FX
- Class Compliant Mode
- 2 x Line/Instrument Input
The two 48V phantom power mic preamps in the RME BabyFace Pro FS features gain range up to 76 dB. Only a few high super expensive audio interfaces can provide such level of gain. To deal with high and low impedance headphones at the same time, this interface features completely separate drivers for each output. Coming to ADAT, you can either use the ADAT port with SMUX or SPDIF for sessions up to 192 kHz.
In order to explore the full potential of this interface, you can take benefit of TotalMixFX software that comes along. It is a real-time digital mixer that allows complete independent routing and mixing solutions. In terms of compatibility, it works with Mac OS X devices, PC, and IOS devices as well.
